Set in a valley between Edinburgh's Old and New Towns, Waverley is one of Britain's great stations β a sweeping glazed roof, the castle above, and a superb variety of trains. As the northern end of the East Coast Main Line it brings LNER Azumas, CrossCountry and TransPennine services together with ScotRail's Scottish network and the Caledonian Sleeper.

Scotland's grand East Coast terminus beneath the castle β LNER Azumas, ScotRail, CrossCountry, TransPennine and the Caledonian Sleeper under a vast glazed roof.
The through and terminal platforms give excellent views across the station, all from public areas with a valid ticket or platform ticket (check current arrangements). The open, well-lit layout makes Waverley one of the better big stations for both logging and photography.
LNER Class 800 Azumas on the East Coast Main Line to London, CrossCountry Voyagers to the South West, TransPennine Express services, and the full range of ScotRail units across the Scottish network β plus the overnight Caledonian Sleeper. A genuinely varied catch.
Waverley is primarily a passenger station; freight is occasional, with more to be found on the approaches and the wider Scottish network than at the platforms themselves.
Weekday daytime offers the fullest timetable; early evening brings the Caledonian Sleeper. Always confirm the current timetable before travelling.
The glazed roof gives good natural light and the long platforms offer clear angles β one of the more photogenic major stations. Keep behind the yellow line and clear of passengers.
Waverley is in the centre of Edinburgh, a short walk from Princes Street and the Old Town, and is best reached by train or on foot. Limited drop-off access only; public transport is recommended.
A fine family choice: frequent trains, a dramatic setting beneath the castle, and a spacious, well-lit layout. Keep children close and behind the yellow line.
Stay in public areas and behind the yellow line, never cross the tracks except by designated bridges or crossings, do not obstruct passengers or staff, and always follow instructions from railway staff. Never trespass on the railway or enter restricted areas for a photograph.
A northern crossroads with superb variety β the West Coast Main Line, the SettleβCarlisle, the Cumbrian Coast and heavy freight all meet here.
One of Britain's grandest stations and a superb East Coast Main Line spot β with the National Railway Museum right next door.
