Train spotting at York
York is a highlight of any spotting trip: a magnificent curved-roof station on the East Coast Main Line, with fast expresses, cross-country services and freight in abundance — and the National Railway Museum a short walk away. Where to spot at York
The station platforms, beneath the famous curved overall roof, are the accessible public vantage point for through and stopping services. A valid ticket or platform ticket is required — check current arrangements. The National Railway Museum nearby makes an excellent combined day out.
What trains you'll see
East Coast Main Line expresses, cross-country and TransPennine services, regional trains and regular freight. York's variety and setting make it a favourite, and the adjacent museum adds historic locomotives to the day.

The curved trainshed is one of the most photogenic settings on the network, though platforms can be busy. Keep well behind the yellow line, mind other passengers, and never obstruct walkways for a shot.

York is a major interchange with excellent rail links, so arriving by train is simple from across the country. City-centre and station parking is available for drivers; confirm current arrangements first.
