What is freight spotting?

Freight spotting means watching and recording the locomotives and wagons that move goods around Britain — containers, aggregates, fuel, cars, infrastructure materials and more. Unlike the clock-face passenger timetable, freight is more variable, which is part of the appeal: you never quite know what will appear, and a good catch feels earned.

The main freight operators

Britain's freight is run by a handful of companies, each with its own liveries that make them easy to tell apart at a glance:

• DB Cargo — typically red
• Freightliner — green and grey
• GB Railfreight (GBRf) — colourful, varied schemes
• Colas Rail — orange, yellow and black

Learning the liveries is a quick way to identify who's running a train before you even read the number.

The locomotives you'll see

The undisputed workhorse is the Class 66, which hauls a huge share of Britain's freight and is often a spotter's first catch.
