Train spotting at Tamworth

Tamworth is one of the most interesting stations for a spotter: the West Coast Main Line runs on a high-level pair of platforms, crossing the Birmingham–Derby cross-country route on the low level below. That layout, on the freight-heavy Trent Valley, makes it a favourite for watching fast expresses and a great deal of freight.

Where to spot at Tamworth

Both the high-level (West Coast Main Line) and low-level (cross-country) platforms are accessible public vantage points. A valid ticket or platform ticket is required — check current arrangements, and spot from public areas only.

What trains you'll see

Fast West Coast Main Line expresses and freight on the high level, and cross-country services on the low level, giving a good mix from the two-level layout. The Trent Valley setting means freight is a highlight.

Freight

The Trent Valley is a major freight route, so Tamworth is a strong freight location, commonly Class 66 among other types, for operators including Freightliner, DB Cargo and GB Railfreight. Allow time, as freight timings vary.

Best days & times

Weekday daytime gives the best passenger service and good freight. As always, freight is variable — patience pays. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Photography

The high level allows record shots of fast passing services; light and angles vary. Keep well behind the yellow line, especially given the speed of expresses, and mind other passengers.

Facilities

  • Staffed station
  • Toilets
  • Step-free access (check current status)
  • Car parking

Getting there & parking

Tamworth is served on both the West Coast and cross-country routes, so the train is an easy way to arrive; station car parking is available for drivers. Confirm current arrangements first.

Family suitability

The two-level layout is engaging, but the fast line speeds on the high level mean keeping children close and well behind the yellow line is essential.

Safety & etiquette

Expresses pass the high level at speed, so stay well behind the yellow line. Remain in public areas, use designated bridges and crossings only, don't obstruct passengers or staff, follow staff instructions, and never trespass.
