Carlisle is one of the finest all-round spotting stations in the North. Where the West Coast Main Line meets the scenic Settle–Carlisle, the Tyne Valley and the Cumbrian Coast lines, it serves up Avanti Pendolinos, TransPennine services, Northern and ScotRail units — and, crucially, a steady flow of heavy West Coast freight.

A northern crossroads with superb variety — the West Coast Main Line, the Settle–Carlisle, the Cumbrian Coast and heavy freight all meet here.
The platforms under the station's glazed roof give clear views of both calling and passing trains, from public areas with a valid ticket or platform ticket (check current arrangements). The through lines carry fast passenger and freight workings.
Avanti West Coast Pendolinos on the WCML, TransPennine Express services (including Class 397 and Class 68-hauled trains), Northern and ScotRail units on the regional and scenic lines, and a genuinely good variety of freight — often Class 66-hauled — on the West Coast corridor.
Carlisle is one of the better freight-watching stations in the North: the West Coast Main Line brings a regular flow of intermodal, cement, nuclear-flask and other freight, typically hauled by Class 66 and related types. Timings vary, so patience pays off.
Weekday daytime generally offers the best mix of passenger and freight; freight can appear at any time, so allow a few hours. Always confirm the current timetable before travelling.
The station roof and long platforms offer reasonable angles, though light can be flat under the canopy. Keep behind the yellow line, especially near the fast lines.
Carlisle station is in the city centre with station car parking, and is well connected by rail on the West Coast Main Line and the regional and scenic lines. Check current parking and access before you set off.
A reasonable family choice with frequent trains and good variety, though the fast lines and freight demand extra care. Keep children close and well behind the yellow line.
Stay in public areas and behind the yellow line, take particular care near the fast lines where trains pass at speed, never cross the tracks except by designated bridges, do not obstruct passengers or staff, and follow railway staff instructions. Never trespass on the railway or enter restricted areas for a photograph.
One of Britain's most famous railway junctions — a classic West Coast Main Line spot with heavy passenger and freight variety.
The North West's principal hub — Avanti Pendolinos, TransPennine, Northern and CrossCountry services under a magnificent curved trainshed.
Scotland's grand East Coast terminus beneath the castle — LNER Azumas, ScotRail, CrossCountry, TransPennine and the Caledonian Sleeper under a vast glazed roof.
