Trains at Manchester Piccadilly railway station

Train spotting at Manchester Piccadilly

Manchester Piccadilly is the gateway to the North West, its historic curved glass trainshed covering a constant flow of inter-city, regional and local trains. Avanti West Coast Pendolinos, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry and Northern services all converge here, making it one of the busiest and most rewarding spotting stations in the North.

Where to spot at Manchester Piccadilly

The terminal and through platforms both offer excellent views, all from public areas with a valid ticket or platform ticket (check current arrangements). The through platforms (13 and 14) are particularly busy with passing services.

What trains you'll see

Avanti West Coast Pendolinos to London, TransPennine Express units (including Class 397 and 802) across the North and to Scotland, CrossCountry Voyagers, and the full range of Northern and regional units. Frequent and varied.

Freight

Piccadilly is a passenger station; freight around Manchester is better sought elsewhere on the regional network. Occasional engineering and stock moves pass through.

Best days & times

Weekday daytime for the fullest timetable; the through platforms are busy throughout. Always confirm the current timetable before travelling.

Photography

The grand trainshed roof gives atmospheric light on the terminal platforms; the through platforms are more open. Keep behind the yellow line and clear of the busy flow.

Getting there & parking

Piccadilly is in central Manchester, reached by train, Metrolink tram or on foot. Public transport is strongly recommended over driving.

Family suitability

A good family choice: frequent trains and a spacious, impressive station. Keep children close and behind the yellow line at all times.

Safety & etiquette

Stay in public areas and behind the yellow line, never cross the tracks except by designated bridges or crossings, do not obstruct passengers or staff, and always follow instructions from railway staff. Never trespass on the railway or enter restricted areas for a photograph.
