Birmingham New Street is one of the beating hearts of the national rail network β more trains call here than almost anywhere else in Britain. Beneath a bright modern concourse, the platforms send CrossCountry, Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern and West Midlands services out across the country, giving spotters an almost non-stop procession.

Britain's busiest interchange outside London β a covered city-centre hub with a near-constant flow of CrossCountry, Avanti, London Northwestern and West Midlands services.
The through platforms are the place to watch, with services calling in both directions almost continuously. A valid ticket or platform ticket is required β check current arrangements with the station. Note the platforms are enclosed and dimly lit, so New Street is better for logging numbers than for photography.
An intense, almost non-stop mix: CrossCountry Voyagers linking Scotland, the North East and the South West; Avanti West Coast Pendolinos to London and the North West; and London Northwestern and West Midlands local and regional units. The sheer frequency makes it one of the best places in Britain for variety.
New Street is a tunnel-bound city-centre passenger station, so booked freight is rare here; West Midlands freight is better sought at Nuneaton and Tamworth on the Trent Valley.
Weekday daytime offers the fullest timetable and a constant stream of movements β there is rarely a quiet moment through the peaks. Always confirm the current timetable before travelling.
Photography is difficult: the platforms are enclosed, low-lit and busy, so New Street suits number-taking more than photos. Keep well behind the yellow line and clear of the heavy passenger flow.
New Street sits right in the centre of Birmingham and is reached most easily by train from across the country, or on foot from the city centre. It is not a drive-to destination; public transport is strongly recommended.
A reasonable choice for families and beginners thanks to the sheer frequency of trains β short waits between sightings β but it is busy and enclosed, so keep children close and well behind the yellow line at all times.
Stay in public areas and behind the yellow line, never cross the tracks except by designated bridges or crossings, do not obstruct passengers or staff, and always follow instructions from railway staff. Never trespass on the railway or enter restricted areas for a photograph.
A busy Trent Valley junction on the West Coast Main Line, where cross-country routes meet the fast line β and a strong freight location.
A distinctive two-level station where the West Coast Main Line crosses the BirminghamβDerby route β and a superb freight spot.
A major West Coast Main Line junction where the Stoke and Birmingham routes diverge β strong passenger flow with steady freight.
