Trains at Bristol Temple Meads railway station

Train spotting at Bristol Temple Meads

Bristol Temple Meads is the great railway gateway to the South West, its curved overall roof a Brunel masterpiece. Great Western Railway Intercity Express Trains, CrossCountry Voyagers and a range of regional and local units keep the platforms busy, making it one of the most rewarding โ€” and photogenic โ€” stations in the West.

Brunel's grand South West hub โ€” GWR Intercity Express Trains, CrossCountry and local units under a sweeping curved roof.

Where to spot at Bristol Temple Meads

The curved through and terminal platforms give sweeping views of calling and passing trains, all from public areas with a valid ticket or platform ticket (check current arrangements). The sharply curved platforms are a distinctive feature.

What trains you'll see

Great Western Railway Class 800 IETs on the main lines to London, South Wales and the West; CrossCountry Voyagers linking Scotland and the North with the South West; and GWR regional and local units (including Class 158, 165 and 166). A good, varied catch.

Freight

The Bristol area sees a reasonable amount of freight โ€” aggregates and intermodal among others, often Class 66-hauled โ€” though much of it passes on the avoiding lines rather than through the station platforms.

Best days & times

Weekday daytime offers the fullest timetable and the best chance of variety. Always confirm the current timetable before travelling.

Photography

The curved roof and platforms make Temple Meads one of the more photogenic big stations, with good angles along the curves. Keep behind the yellow line and clear of passengers.

Getting there & parking

Temple Meads is a short distance from Bristol city centre with station car parking, and is well connected by rail. Check current parking and access before travelling.

Family suitability

A good family choice: frequent trains, a dramatic historic setting and a spacious layout. Keep children close and behind the yellow line.

Safety & etiquette

Stay in public areas and behind the yellow line, never cross the tracks except by designated bridges or crossings, do not obstruct passengers or staff, and always follow instructions from railway staff. Never trespass on the railway or enter restricted areas for a photograph.
